Question:
I am wondering what has worked well with others?

Answer:
I am going to the doctor tomorrow as the arthritis pain(lower back/hips and knees) is getting worse. Previously the doc had me take ibuprofen(rx strength 800mg) and naproxsyn. Neither have posed a problem with my gastro tract or have bothered my Crohn's, but they also don't do much for the arthritis pain. What I am finding myself doing is taking the percocet, the doc prescribes for abdominal pain, for the arthritis pain, and I would prefer not to have to take a narcotic for moderate pain. I am wondering what has worked well with others? I realize that all of react differently, but my doctor isn't the sharpest pencil and doesn't have a clue about Crohn's. (let me explain, the gastro doc defers ANY pain treatment to either the GP or Pain specialist) So I like to have some ideas to present to him, otherwise he will be like, I am not sure what would work since you've tried Motrin. Like I said, not a real sharp pencil. So I would really appreciate you input. I've already tried the aluminum hat and Taylor chewed my hot pink slippers, so what else should I try??? are they sure it is arthritis? Depending on where your CD is and how it affects absorption of certain foods you may have high uric acid. It is measured in a 24hr urine test. The docs have said it is arthritis. Here is a question for you, if it is high uric acid, would it not affect all joints? I have CD and a problem with my knees and hips. My Orthopedic doc got with my Gastro doc and they came up with Relafen for my pain in my hips and knees. I am on 1000mg a day and it works really good on my pain and as long as I take it with food it doesn't bother my CD. No it doesn't affect all joints. For some it is only the feet for others hands and feet etc. I believe it is crystals that accumulate in certain areas, but not sure as it has been awhile since I was a nurse. There are a number of NSAID choices, some of which may mess up IBD in some people. According to Dr. Cattano, Relafen is a reasonably safe choice, but it doesn't work for everyone. It helped me for about a year before the pain got really bad again. Then there is Ketoprofen, Flurbiprofen -- probably not good choices! Naprosin (which I think sucks!) and Motrin -- both of which you have tried. There are two new ones, Arthrotec which actually has a stomach buffer which may or may not prevent it from screwing up IBD, and I don't recall the other. Ultram is a fairly new pain medicine that comes under a totally new class of drug. It is neither an NSAID or a narcotic or even that tylenol stuff. Supposedly it is not addictive. And it helped me for a little while. Personally, I loved my darvocets for a long, long time, and I still use them as my primary pain relief. They are narcotic and potentially addictive, but they are probably the least addictive of the choices in this class of drug. When the pain gets really bad, I step up to percocets, but even that doesn't help a whole lot. There are a number of NSAID choices, some of which may mess up IBD in some people. The other new arthritis med. is something called DayPro, it works really good doesn't bother the stomach, the only draw back is that it is very expensive. I discovered that Darvocet-N 100 pain pills help me. I have moderate Crohn's. Have you tried prednesone therapy for your Crohns? It has been the only thing that just about totally took away all my symptoms. Why not get a Doc who is with it? Insurance won't let you? If they will, look around. A good gastro doc makes all the difference.
